Crash & Braindump

15 October 201107:47AMlife

Right. I have a lot of things fizzing around in my brain and I need to get them out. Let's start from the top, shall we?

Assignments I had 2 of them due yesterday. One was economics, which was bleh. The other was classics, which was yay! The classics one was actually a webcomic, using Lego. Yes, I get credit for playing with Lego. Yes, my degree is awesome. You should totally check it out. Anyway, that's why my brain is feeling a bit fried right now. Hence 'crash'.

Job interview I had a job interview yesterday, to work at Subiaco oval. Probably in a 'bar', which is really more of a beer dispenser, but I'm not complaining. I'll be able to pay my phone bill now. This interview is another reason my brain is feeling fried. Not that it was stressful, it was actually pretty boring. Walking around an empty stadium and going behind the scenes was pretty cool though.

Minecraft Server It's back. We have a Google map now too.

Miscellanea I have new shoes and I need a haircut.

Calvin and Hobbes meet APoD

This is a bit Linux/Mac only. I found these awesome scripts Basically what it does is takes NASA's astronomy picture of the day and superimposes Calvin and Hobbes looking awestruck on it. Which is adorable. Here's an example of what it generates:

See? Adorable. Major props to the guys who created those. You've just saved me the trouble of ever needing to hunt for desktop backgrounds again.

Thief of Time - Terry Pratchett I just read this again. I forgot how amazing it is.

You'll be sorry when I'm dead - Marieke Hardy I borrowed this from a friend. Funniest book I've read in a week where I've also read Pratchett. That should tell you enough.

Doctor Who Gosh, wasn't that season final something?

Doctor Who (again) I just watched about half of the 1996 TV movie. It's okay, but it has no soul. It's not Doctor Who. We are so damn lucky the Americans never got their hands on it for a full series. His Tardis interior is cool though.

How I Met Your Mother - Season 1 I borrowed this off a friend too. While I was housesitting I watched a disc a night. I like it a lot.

Portal 2 DLC It's 6 chambers long, fiendishly difficult, and hilariously funny. Also free. I approve whole heartedly.

Big Bang Theory The first episode of this season of the Big Bang Theory is probably the funniest thing I've seen on TV all year. Maybe that's just because the show's been stuck in reruns for so long that anything original seems funnier, but I liked it.

Terra Nova I don't want to like this show, but I find myself watching it every week anyway. It's... passable. Also bears a slight resemblance to Julian May's Saga of the Exiles, only more gritty and real and modern and without the psychic wizard aliens.

Group politics Here's a cautionary tale about getting involved in social groups after their formation. The inside jokes are easy enough to explain (assuming someone's willing to), and you get everyone's names quickly enough, but the real stickler is when you're sitting next to someone who's crying because of some ongoing group politicking and you haven't got the slightest idea what the hell is going on. Very confusing.

Socialists This is a sentiment best expressed through the medium of xkcd-ripoffery:

In all seriousness, I have the utmost respect for the 'Occupy *' movement. I think what they're doing is important, and they have a legitimate point, and more importantly it looks like they're not afraid to have a bit of fun doing it. But upper-middle-class latte-sipping Macbook-toting university-educated pseudo-socialists who claim to be that 99%? That gets me.

Alright, I think that's everything. Good.
