"Generation Y"

30 July 200811:12AMrants

"THEY'RE hip, smart-talking, brash and sometimes seem to suffer from an overdose of self esteem."

This kind of stuff pisses me off. Seriously. Everyone knows that horoscopes are absolute garbage (They are designed to describe anyone, it's called the Forer Effect, and it's why horoscopes seem accurate but aren't.). This 'Gen Y' crap is exactly the same. These kind of articles appear every few months in newspapers, TV guides, and current affairs shows - all media dominated by the last 'generation'... coincidence, I think not. How about this one;

"Are you feeling valued, Generation Y? Is anyone being mean to you, Generation Y? Are we paying you enough, Generation Y? Can I get you a pillow, Generation Y?"

Or how about this:

"And if there's a generalisation to be made about young Generation Y people, it's that they don't like waiting. With a BlackBerry in one hand, half-caf latte in the other and an iPod-plugged earphones surgically attached to ears, they are ambitious, demanding and apparently born to rule. Right now!"

But that's exactly what these are. Gross, gross generalisations. Just for kicks, let's look at some of the most common attributes of 'Gen Y':

All of these but the last one are 'cookie-cutter' personality buzzwords. They apply to many people, not just 'Gen Y'

Likewise, not all members of 'Gen Y' are these things. It's just fortune-cookie horoscopes. Also, the similarity of the results makes me think that all these stories are the result of one survey or research project. Hellooooo people, the Scientific Method! The secondary implications of that are that papers, magazines and TV shows have been running the same story over and over and over... That's just plain lazy. Really people. Find something else to talk about other than whining and reminiscent "Kids these days!" stories.

Or... it could all be true. I don't really care. My problem with it is that it's a gross over-generalization. That, and the fact that whinging about people younger than you ain't gonna change anything. Live with it.
